# Redirect Setup Guide

Redirects send visitors from an old URL to a new URL automatically. They are useful when redesigning a website, moving pages, closing campaign pages, or changing links. Redirects help visitors avoid 404 pages and can reduce SEO loss.

## What Is a Redirect?

A redirect is a URL forwarding rule. For example, visitors who open `/old-about` can be sent to `/about`. The old link remains useful, and search engines can understand that the page has moved.

## When to Use Redirects

Use redirects when a page URL changes, an old page has a replacement page, campaign links need to point to a new campaign, an old website is migrated to Creght, or existing external links should continue to work.

## Redirect or 404?

If the old content has a clear new location, use a redirect. If the content no longer exists and has no replacement, a 404 may be appropriate. See [Redirect or 404?](/docs/ai/redirect-or-404.md) for more guidance.

## Open Redirect Settings

Open the project editor, go to **Settings**, and find the redirect settings. You can add, edit, or delete redirect rules there.

## Add a Redirect Rule

A redirect rule usually has two fields: the source path and the target path. For example, `/old-about` can redirect to `/about`, and `/campaign-2025` can redirect to `/campaign-2026`. Save the rule and publish the website for it to take effect online.

## Path Rules

Use site-relative paths starting with `/` whenever possible, such as `/old-page` and `/new-page`. Avoid setting the source and target to the same path, and avoid rules that point back to each other.

## Verify After Publishing

Open the old link, check that it reaches the target page, test in an incognito window, and verify multilingual paths separately if your site uses multiple languages.

## SEO Tips

Before a redesign, list important old URLs. Redirect important pages to relevant new pages. Avoid long redirect chains. After publishing, test links used in search, ads, and social media.

## FAQ

If a redirect does not work immediately, confirm the site has been published and test in an incognito window. Well-planned redirects usually help SEO during page migration. Multilingual pages can also use redirects, such as redirecting `/jp/old-page` to `/jp/new-page`.
